Summary: He stood there and kept watching the fireworks. Well, not really watching; remembering.
He had fallen asleep in his living room; his book had fallen on his knees. It had become a habit. Every summer he had to wait here alone, in this miserable house, for two painful months. It was better than living here all year long, but still…
He was awaken by a ‘BANG!’ outside, and the sound of laughter. Annoyed, he went to the window and saw what had caused the noise: fireworks. Like bubbles of colour exploding in the sky, brightening the night. He sighed. These bloody muggles, always celebrating something.
But he didn’t move; he stood there and kept watching. Well, not really watching; remembering.
‘I don’t want to go, Lily, it’s the same thing every year. It’s boring.’
‘Oh, stop complaining; what could be more boring than staying here? Come on!’
She had talked him into going to see the fireworks; she did so every year. He couldn’t say no to her anyway. He never told her so, but the little boy he was then had enjoyed himself. Not because of the fireworks themselves, though. As Lily was watching them, he was watching her. She looked really happy, and it hadn’t been the case lately, her sister was bullying her more than ever, and she hated it at home. But tonight she looked happy; and he was happy for her. Her smile made him smile.
That night, he realised he was in love with Lily Evans.
He came back to reality when he heard Wormtail’s footsteps upstairs. He certainly didn’t want to see him now. Grabbing a jacket on his way (a cloak wasn’t the best outfit to wear if you wanted to go unnoticed) he left his house.
He could feel the old pain in his chest; it came back every time he thought about her. The street was empty, but he didn’t feel like using magic to get away; instead he walked and walked until he reached a hill nearby and sat on the grass.
Lily. Why did he have to miss her so? Oh, Lily... He would never forget her; alive or dead, she was his reason to live, to carry on. Everything he did, he did for her. People could doubt him all they wanted, but as long as he still knew that, he didn’t care.
But tonight, there was no mission, no lies; he didn’t have to close his mind and pretend to be someone else. Tonight he could let go and remember the love of his life once more. Tonight he could watch the fireworks and cry.
The end.
